London is an ancient city, and everywhere you stand on the route of the Lord Mayor’s Show there are older cities under your feet, from Victorian cobbles back to the first Roman roads and buildings twenty feet below modern street level. Every stone and tree has a story, and if you want to hear them, you can't do better than to listen to a City of London Guide Lecturer.
On the afternoon of the Show, after the returning procession has passed and the crowd thinned a bit, head for No 1 Poultry. That's the big pink and yellow building opposite Mansion House, near Bank tube station. It's marked on the map.
Here once again you will find officially qualified members of the City of London Guide Lecturers Association ready and waiting to take you on very popular Free Guided Walks (any small charitable donation to the Lord Mayor's Appeal welcome) arriving at Blackfriars in plenty of time for the fireworks which are at 5pm. Everyone is welcome, the gently paced walks are suitable for all ages including children and the routes will be wheelchair-friendly, with no steps and few hills.
For 2000 years since the time of the Romans the City has rebuilding itself as a centre for trade. Trading is still very much at the heart of what the City as the world's leading international financial centre is all about. It also has a wealth of fantastic history to be found in its streets and brought to life by one of the City's highly trained Guides. As you wander in the footsteps of such famous London characters such as Dick Whittington, Charles Dickens, Samuel Pepys, and Dr Johnson you are met by wonderful contrasts - exciting new office developments, historic plaques, Sir Christopher Wren's Churches and wonderful gardens - all here in just one square mile!
The walks will start off at around 3pm. Come along and have fun and help us raise some money for Charity!
